ABOUT: Jonathan Willoughby is an erudite, vain, and sarcastic young man. On a familiar basis he prefers 'Miles' (as there are already an obscene number of Jonathans, thank you very much). Aboard the Mercury, however, he refuses to acknowledge any address more familiar than 'Willoughby' and, to limited avail, often insists upon the 'Doctor' appellation society commonly refuses surgeons. He is a proud man, often skewering the high society he has always striven to become part of, and he considers himself worth every merit bestowed upon the physicians too genteel to even understand the human bodies whose medications they prescribe.

And yet – it was his endeavour to become just such a physician that resulted in the unfortunate captivity he suffers now. After two years abroad as an army and then expedition surgeon, Miles finally came across an opportunity to elevate himself into a genteel profession when he treated a man whose cousin was a board member of the Royal College of Physicians. It was a rare opportunity, and he promptly quit the expedition to return home where he could finally pursue a gentleman's profession. Traveling aboard the Aspen Thrush was a reluctant choice at best, as Miles had always retained a small taste for ships and an even lesser regard for their crews. But it was a tribulation worth bearing – at least until the Pirates showed up.


CAPTIVITY: Miles never joined the Mercury of his own volition, and the reiteration of that fact is an act of which he will never tire. While other captives were ransomed, a surgeon in the air was a prize too rare and valuable to be freed – particularly one with a complete medicine chest and a sound understanding of the anatomical science as well as surgical technique – and Miles was forced to remain aboard until, as per custom, “a new surgeon shall be obtained”.

Until that happens he remains stuck amongst the crew: a constant source of criticism, haughty reticence, and an amazing display of refusal to do any extra manual work because he already has a job to do, if you please, and risking his hands with the shipwork would be utter madness. He's rarely off the ship and when he it is always with an escort, as he is likely to run off considering he has a fiancee and caree to return to.

Despite his own personal mission to be irritating as all hell when the mood strikes him, Miles is an excellent surgeon and scientist. Although initially cautious, the realization that a surgeon was too important to be killed off has freed his tongue for both abuse and advice. Miles is a smart, ambitious man who both catalogues the wrongs against him as well as apreciates the handsome sum his cut of the booty has brought. For all his vanity and pride, there is sufficient talent, wit, and observational prowess to warrant it.
