Caradoc Dearborn

Basics
NAME: Caradoc Dearborn
AGE/BIRTHDAY: 37 / 20 April 1943
BLOOD STATUS: Derrr... 5/8-blood? There's muggle blood in the grandparents/great-grandparents somewhere.
FORMER HOUSE: Hufflepuff, 1961
OCCUPATION: Hit wizard, overseer of sting tactics. Auror intermediary. Vigilante.

PLAYED BY: Idris Elba
GAME: Roadmaps || [insanejournal.com profile] no1curradoc

Relationships
FAMILY:

GUINEVERE DEARBORN. mother, witch, living.
ISAIAH DEARBORN. father, wizard, deceased.
MARIANA DEARBORN. Ex-wife, deceased. Caradoc's fault murdered by Death Eaters.
CONSTANTINE DEARBORN. Son, deceased. Caradoc's fault murdered by Death Eaters.
CAELIA DEARBORN. Daughter, deceased. Caradoc's fault murdered by Death Eaters.

DAGONET ('DAGO') Corgi. Caradoc's animal companion from his sixth year at Hogwarts. Yes, that makes the dog ~20 years old but it's a MAGICAL WIZARDING DOG so hush. This means that not only can this dog live obscenely long, but he's incredibly smart, gives awesome massages, and is super vicious when provoked. To non-Death Eaters, though, Dago will invasively love you.

SEXUALITY: Adamantly heterosexual. Don't suggest otherwise. He's fine with gays as long as he doesn't have to share a bed when traveling (fix that: he doesn't share beds with guys ever straight or not) and as long as nobody hits on him. Any man that does hit on him though will get punched in the face. (OOC: I feel like I should assure everyone here that my character's view on homosexuality is NOT my own)

SIGNIFICANT OTHER: None.
CHILDREN:: None.

Politics
LOYALTY/ALLIANCE: Order of the Phoenix

ROLE IN THE WAR: As a Hit Wizard at the Ministry, Caradoc oversaw sting tactics against criminal organizations responsible for smuggling and counterfeit operations in the Wizarding world. He's a capable duelist, and is trained in how to restrain a target without attracting muggle attention. The experience has served him well in strategizing against Death Eaters in the war; his plans aren't the kind many would like, as his philosophy is one of 'The Ends Justify The Means'.

Caradoc sees the hard decisions; he recognizes that there are things required for the cause that others may find to be morally questionable (or outright reprehensible), and he’s willing carry them out. After all, the Death Eaters aren’t going to stop or give up information just because the Good Guys asked so nicely. Even if some of them won’t cave to torture, there are some that will. There are Death Eaters who would rather die than talk, but that doesn’t mean they’re willing to risk endangerment to their loved ones. He knows that being forced into a negotiation will ultimately do more harm than good: when the Bad Guys take the innocent or loved ones hostage you can’t give in, no matter who it is. It’s not pretty, but it’s how his mind works. A majority of his ideas are uncomfortable or outright controversial, but they usually are frighteningly effective. While he’s often the first willing to broach such ideas aloud, he isn’t gung-ho about immediately offering up a bunch of innocents to slaughter. He understands that those actions for when they’re the last option or only feasible option -- i.e. the noble route stupidly risks more harm to the overall cause than they can afford.

He's the good guy that isn't really all that good. He brings an element to the Order than can be downright ruthless when he needs to be in regards to 'collateral damage' and is certainly crueler than necessary where the actual Death Eaters themselves are concerned.

POLITICAL VIEWS: Caradoc's family was distanced enough from muggles that he never had to deal with the derogatory jeers Purists reserve for muggle-borns and half-bloods. But his family does have muggle blood in it, and they never bothered to hide that fact by editing their family tree. Caradoc is against the Purist philosophy and believes that muggle-borns are every bit legitimate as Wizards as any Pure-Blood. However, he grew up thoroughly entrenched in the Wizarding world and -- aside from consulting with muggle-borns to make sure his clothes won't stick out in the Muggle world -- he has no first-hand experience with Muggles. He has preconceptions enough to be a bit condescending toward them, but he is neither firmly for nor against on issues regarding the Statute of Secrecy. Basically, the jury is still out for Caradoc as to forming any definite opinion on Muggles themselves until he gets some first-hand knowledge.

With werewolves and vampires, however, Caradoc is not so open-minded. He is wary enough of those groups to support some legislation in monitoring them. While he is capable of getting along with some individuals, that does not mean he's okay with the groups as a whole.

He also avidly supports the more hard-lined measures the Ministry has adopted toward dark wizards, such as Barty Crouch legalizing the use of the Unforgivable Curses by Aurors on suspected dark wizards. OOC: I'm going by the book canon for that bit, let me know if this hasn't happened yet (or won't happen)!

Appearance
APPEARANCE: If you were a lost, lonely tourist in dire need of directions, Caradoc would not be the man you would turn to in your time of need. He's tall, well-built, and usually looks like he's on the verge of glowering at something when he isn't actually glowering at something. He marches into the room with a job to do and if you aren't going to prove useful than you should just GTFO out of his way, thanks. Unfortunately, as he usually finds most people woefully lacking in some kind of regard, his expressions usually range from 'Are you fucking kidding me?', 'You're a complete idiot', to 'WHY are you so bloody useless?!!!!'.

If Caradoc looks gruff, abrasive, and efficient it is because he is gruff, abrasive, and efficient. He's extremely direct in all his aspects, appearance included. The man is the poster-child for What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get(-Whether-You-Want-It-That-Way-Or-Not). Caradoc wears nothing more and nothing less than what's required for the task at hand (whether that includes military jungle gear or professional muggle clothes). He doesn't dress down or up for any occasion. There are no shiny doohickeys or glittery chains on Caradoc's person: he's not some sort of Malfoy peacock uselessly strutting about. He is in possession of an interesting assortment of hats and headgear, but it is unclear whether he actively collects them or whether it's the result of an unfortunate array of gifts from friends/family.

Personality
WAND: 14 3/4", oak, dragon heartstring core, sturdy and rigid.

BOGGART: Manticore, as a child his neighbor tried to illegally breed them and they got out into the Dearborns' yard. Most. Frightening. Thing. EVER. As a result he regards any breach to the Ban on Experimental Breeding as a personal affront and reacts accordingly. (So, y'know... if there's ever a Hagrid in game...)

PATRONUS: Bull. Strong, stubborn, and dangerous. He used to think of the first time his son flew on a broom, but that happy thought has been tainted due to his son's passing and Caradoc's part in it. So his patronus is a bit... 'tainted', if you will. He can still use it for communication, but it isn't nearly as effective against Dementors as it once was.

LIKES: teaching, dispensing usually unwanted advice, wizarding mystery novels, picking apart inaccuracies in said mystery/crime novels, eating store-bought/fast-food on plates (it somehow makes up for the fact that he doesn't cook, okay?!), kids, directness, hurting Death Eaters even if when doesn't have to

DISLIKES: queues, 'weird' art, perfume-y teas, guys who wear earrings, indirectness, women expecting him to be some kind of mind-reader, getting yelled at for being honest

STRENGTHS: loyalty, honesty, hard-working, strategizing and tactics, dueling, efficiency, persistence, Telling You That You're Doing It Wrong, patience where work and duty are concerned, Showing You How It's Done, the Cruciatus Curse

WEAKNESSES: being Mr. Judge-Jury-and-Executioner, tactless, ruthless, forming lasting and healthy relationships, blurring the line between vengeance and justice, possibly obsessive bloodlust in regards to Death Eaters, casting an effective Patronus against dementors, impatience where people are concerned, borderline stalking his exes after a break-up

KNOWN INFORMATION: It is known that Caradoc is in a senior position with the Hit Wizard department, and he has a colorful and celebrated history in successfully breaking up organized criminal activity (some regarded Counterfeit Cauldrons, smuggled Dragon Eggs, and black market dealing of Dark and Cursed artifacts. It is also known that his family was murdered by Death Eaters, and for that reason few would be surprised that he would work for the Order (although it currently is not suspected).

DETAILED PERSONALITY: If the Order were to play a game of Good Cop/Bad Cop, Caradoc would be the cop making rude accusations about your mother as he you uses your lapel to propel you into the wall... while Mr. Good Cop reassuringly explains how cooperation is in your best interests. He has a black and white view of Right and Wrong made all the more rigid in that, for Caradoc, it’s all determined by the end-game. Murdering muggles is wrong; but if the best option to defeating Death Eaters or saving a greater group of people requires muggles or innocent bystanders to be killed? Well, that’s called Collateral Damage and sometimes that’s just the price that has to be paid for a victory.

He understand his reasons for the things that he has done, and he only does them when he feels there was no better choice, so his conscious isn’t excessively troubled by past decisions. Sure, there are some choices he’s made that can bring on nightmares (though, honestly, he’d probably make the same choice if he had to do it again), but Caradoc’s willing to bear with nightmares if it helps save muggle/wizarding society in the long run. One the flipside, he is especially rougher with Death Eaters than he needs to be. And no, he doesn’t lose any sleep over that. For him? Justice means an 'Eye for an Eye' and he doesn't particularly care whether the law always agrees.

Caradoc is stubborn with a propensity for cutting his own nose to spite his face. He’s not a good person to play chicken with simply because, yes, there is the serious possibility that he cares more getting back at you than his own safety. (Of course such an extreme case is usually reserved for Death Eaters, dark wizards, and occasional Ministry members that seem hell-bent on fucking things up for him.) Probably about 80% of his past relationships failed because he practically gave himself ulcers trying to ‘get even’ instead of just shutting up and moving on. He sports a serious case of ‘Nothing Left To Lose’ and is inclined toward reckless endangerment of his own safety (though he is careful in regarding others’ safety).

He’s a hard-worker and forceful in his personality, but he doesn’t actually feel the need to lead the group: as long as Caradoc feels like the goal is being met and the group is on track, he doesn’t give an iota of damn as to who’s running the show. He’s willing to take on any task, from the drudgery to strategy planning, required for the goal at hand (keyword: ‘REQUIRED’!). Caradoc has always believed that ‘no man is above any task, big or small, required to achieve his ends’ (It’s probably what placed him into Hufflepuff). He's incredibly loyal, protective, and wouldn't hesitate fight on behalf of a friend or another Order member (with possible exceptions of Regulus and Snape). He has a sense of humor, but as he's so used to war-time interactions his humor is usually a bit dark as far as the everyday civilian is concerned.

History

CHILDHOOD:
Caradoc had a happy childhood. Both his parents worked for the Ministry in varying capacities, and they instilled a healthy respect for justice and Right and Wrong. His parents had him a bit later in life and had no more children after him, but there were plenty of other Wizard children in the area that he didn't suffer from a lack of siblings. Although he was an only child, and his family was pretty well off (though not rich), his parents had the good sense not to spoil him. He grew up in a household that emphasized the value of hard work without being dogmatic about it.

HOGWARTS:
With the family values of justice, doing one's own legwork, and Caradoc's loyal disposition it was no surprise that he was sorted into Hufflepuff. ...Well, it was no surprise as long a person pushed the image of a cuddly and warm Hufflefluffball of Love out of their heads. He was a fairly popular kid, if a bit pushy when he thought people were Doing Things Wrong. He worked hard and did well in academics, and took quickly enough to Quidditch that he made Chaser on the Hufflepuff team in his Second year and was made team captain in his Fifth year. It was as Captain that he first started to hone his tactical skills: he had analyze his team's and his oppoenents' strengths and weakness in order to devise plays, and he did very well. It turned out that his pushy nature, which could be overbearing off the field, was a perfectly suited disposition for a Quidditch team captain. The Hufflepuff team won the House Quidditch Cup three years in a row, and it was expected by many that Caradoc would continue a Quidditch career after graduation.

But he didn't. Caradoc loved Quidditch, and loved the strategizing required as a Team Captain, but he had too strong a sense of duty and justice to be comfortable playing a sport for a living. He wanted to go into Magical Law Enforcement. He wanted to catch criminals and break up their operations. Although there were always those practicing dark magic lingering about, Voldemort had not yet entered the public's consciousness and Caradoc saw criminal rings as a more persistent and detrimental problem to the Wizarding community. So he spent his final two years in school working toward getting the N.E.W.T.S. required for Hit Wizard training.

POST-HOGWARTS:

Caradoc was accepted into the program, and about two years after passing the training he married Mariana -- a Ravenclaw from his year. For rest of the decade, things went well (although he did make considerable use of the his bed reserved at St. Mungo's). Caradoc specialized in infiltrating smuggling rings and counterfeit. He first got his picture in the prophet following his work in bringing down a well-organized group that had been smuggling dragon eggs into the country and selling them on the black market. Shortly after this he was promoted to oversee subsequent infiltration and sting operations, and his focus was shifted from infiltration and intelligence-gathering to strategy.

He wasn't dedicated solely to the pursuit of Dark Wizards like an Auror, but there was occasionally some overlap between the usual criminal activity and Dark Wizards. That overlap became more and more common as Voldemort's activities escalated, and Caradoc became familiar with some faces in the Auror department. In particular, the Hit-Wizard squads' confiscations of smuggled dark artifacts increased so drastically during this time such that the Ministry gave Caradoc the additional title of 'Auror Intermediary' by 1974. Unfortunately as his career rocketed forward his family life suffered, and he and Mariana divorced shortly before he was granted the promotion.

Things finally came to a head in the March of 1976. Caradoc's hit-wizards had busted what seemed to be another run-of-the-mill smuggling operation when it was discovered that one of the smugglers had been Imperioed by Death Eaters. Unfortunately this realization was made after a group of Death Eaters ambushed the squad mid-confiscation. Caradoc and the hit-wizards, taken by surprise, suffered heavy losses. But Caradoc had managed to identify and retrieve the item that the Death Eaters seemed concerned about enough to kill a group of hit-wizards. Aware that there were Voldemort supporters who had infiltrated the Ministry, and that the item he had was important to the Death Eaters for some unknown reason, Caradoc secured the item with a Fidelus Charm in which he was the Secret-Keeper of its location until the next step could be determined.

But the Death Eaters found out, and attempted to coerce Caradoc into revealing the item's location by holding his ex-wife and children hostage, the messenger gave him a deadline and everything -- gleefully making sure to emphasize the word 'dead'. The decision wasn't easy even though, deep down, Caradoc knew he could never risk endangering the lives of so many for anyone. He didn't know what was so special about the item, but he knew that anything that the Death Eaters wanted so desperately would endanger the lives of many people. What followed then was the worst 24 hours of Caradoc's life, in which he tried to use all the resources at his disposable to track down where the Death Eaters were hiding his family... only to fail. The messenger showed up on time, with two other Death Eaters in tow that had a hold of Mariana and his children, and Caradoc had to see the look in their eyes when he refused to give up the item and, in turn, sentenced his own family to their messy deaths. He'd say that was the most excruciating pain any human being could be put through, but he knows that would be a lie. He eventually did track down the messenger and the two Death Eaters who had murdered his family. And what he did to them? That was the most excruciating pain a human being could be put through.

THE ORDER:

The true story concerning his family's death -- outside of it being at the hands of Death Eaters -- was never publicized, but it did reach Dumbledore and the Order. Considering that Caradoc apparently knew some of the Order members already, and that he felt that working within the Ministry's laws was no longer adequate to deal with the likes of Voldemort and his supporters, and how he had proven his dedication toward fighting Voldemort and protecting the Wizarding society in the most definite way, Caradoc didn't hesitate to join the Order when asked. He worked within the Ministry, feeding information to the Order that he received through the Hit Wizards' criminal intelligence.

CURRENTLY...:

For the most part, Caradoc's performance has excelled where the War is concerned, but his dedication to fighting for the cause, coupled with a increasingly vengeful drive, has resulted in tunnel-vision. This mindset continually erodes his ability to properly function in a peacetime setting, and he isn't aware of it. Considering the Order still has a job to do in destroying horcruxes and there are still Death Eaters causing trouble that need to be put down, it's likely he won't catch onto just how much his personal life has suffered for a while. He's remained in England, keeping up his cover as he heads up affairs in the Hit Wizard department. I would like for this cover to be blown either before arriving to Egypt or after, but I would like to chat with other players to work out the best/funnest way to do that at this point in the game!

Misc
FIVE THINGS: Five things you've always wanted to RP out/explore about this character but have never gotten the chance to do before, why you picked this character, things you're most looking forward to playing out with this character, how you think your interpretation stands out, how you’d like for your character to grow over the course of the game, plot ideas, etc. Try to include at least one plot idea for your character. Providing this information helps the mod and other players build plots around your character.

• Reason 1 :: You can take the Man out of the War, but you can't take the War out of the Man
Over the years, Caradoc has slowly and unwittingly become a man who probably needs the war just as much as it needs him. Even if Voldemort was well and truly gone for good today, instead of settling down and starting a family Caradoc would re-focus his efforts into hunting down every last Death Eater to ensure they go into a grave or Azkaban. I think Roadmaps provides a unique opportunity in that there is still a war going on, but with Voldemort currently being gone some of the intensity is scaled down enough to allow for Peacetime interactions. Which means there are opportunities to explore how ill-fit Caradoc's disposition has become toward civilian life and friendships, what awkwardness arises as a result, and the sense of purposelessness he might feel when there isn't a battle to fight. In particular because I don't think that Caradoc is a man who does well alone, but his rusty interpersonal skills outside of War-Stuff have isolate him in civilian life.

• Reason 2 :: Justice, or Vengeance?
Initially, Caradoc's motivations for becoming involved with Magical Law Enforcement was a strong sense of justice. But since his family's murder I'd imagine that vengeance has become a significant part of it. I'd like to explore where the lines blur, and have always been intrigued by stories such as The Count of Monte Cristo and Wuthering Heights where vengeance crosses the line. I'd like to explore where the line between the two becomes blurred for Caradoc. Will he even realize it when he crosses the line? If he does will he actually care? I honestly don't know yet, and would love to find out xD.

• Reason 3 :: Order Interactions!
There are so many interactions I'd love to flesh out! I'd imagine that Caradoc would have some kind of bromances going with either some similarly-minded order individual (Moody?) or could have some weird Opposites Attract Duo instead. However, I'd also like to explore the definite contention bound to show up either due to his hardball philosophies or just generally abrasive interactions. Oh, and Regulus and Snape! They used to be Death Eaters. Caradoc hates Death Eaters, and is never going to trust them. He's also not a guy to just shut up and stay quiet about his feelings. BUT, I think it's possible that they may actually top his list when Caradoc feels that something needs to be done and he needs people who aren't going to be morally squeamish about it. I think that has the potential to be a delightfully complex interaction! :D (If you guys are up for it...?)

• Reason 4 :: Ends Justify the Means
I feel like I'm being a bit redundant on this point, but it's such a huge part of his characterization that I have to put it as a Reason as well! I want Caradoc to propose, and act, on ideas that would give other people trouble sleeping at night. Voldemort isn't well and truly gone yet, so the war isn’t over. Sacrifices are still required, and not all solutions get to be noble. For Caradoc, sometimes that means stealing from the other team’s playbook or, possibly, out-badding the Bad Guys. Since no man is an island, I'd imagine this would involve dragging others into it as well!

• Reason 5 :: A New Hope!
I would like to see Caradoc try to forge new friendships and relationships. They'll probably be rocky at best or outright fail, because how does one really get back into forging any kind of serious relationship (platonic or not) after knowing that they're capable of sacrificing the most sacred bonds they have? Especially considering that, horrendous as that moment in his life was, he would make the same choice if he had to do it again.

ONE LAST REASON OKAY!!! :: What about this MYSTERIOUS ITEM-Y THINGy?
There is that mysterious item that some Death Eaters (and possibly Voldemort?) wanted reeeeally badly. And Caradoc, to not mince any words, let his family get killed in order to keep it out of the hands of Death Eaters. So what is this item? Is it a horcrux? Is it some dark magic Item of Mass Destruction? Will it prove to be something that actually wasn't as terrible as he assumed it was, thus leaving Caradoc to reel with the knowledge that he sacrificed his family in vain??? I'M OPEN TO ALL KINDS OF IDEAS HERE!!!
